Pub Crawls in the Johannesburg Inner City!

For nearly the entire time I have been doing tours of the Inner City (4 years!), we (my company Past Experiences) has been talking about or rather threatening to launch a pub crawl and in the last few months we have launched 2!

They have been such a success (just ask the people that have joined us on them) and we have also subsequently organised a few private corporate groups and even a Hen party!

We have tried to cater for 2 budgets- if you have a bit more cash to part with then you can join our private bus crawl called "Phuza Inner City Style"which travels to a whole lot of pubs and drinking spots (historic and new) all over the Inner City. We launched this one with a really fun group of locals who definitely enjoyed many a drink while really getting to know the Inner City!

Our second pub crawl is called the "Braamies Meander"and is a walking tour of all the awesome bars and shebeens in the Braamfontein area! We loved this one and everyones favourite stop was definitely the Shebeen which we couldn't get people to leave as its patrons and owner were so friendly!

Hope you can join us on one soon!

Jo xx

November and December Tour Schedule

essential so please email us on past.experiences@hotmail.com or phone us on 011 678 3905

25th November- Sophiatown Swing- Walking Tour of Sophiatown and a Jazz Listening
Session (Sunday)
(Still
to be finalised)

Sophiatown’s history makes it one of the most significant stories
in South Africa’s recent past. As one of the first sites of forced removals
under apartheid legislation Sophiatown is a place we will never forget. Famous
for its mix of people – political, literary, musical, social, criminal and
cultural “movers and shakers” – Sof’town provided a back-drop for perhaps the
most immortalized period in Johannesburg’s history. An emerging black urban culture and multiracial
groups created literary and artistic melting pots which influence us even
today.
Join Past Experiences and the Trevor Huddleston Memorial Centre
for a walking tour through one of Johannesburg’s most renowned suburbs-
Sophiatown. The tour lead by a community
guide from the centre will show what Sophiatown was like before the forced
removals, what it became afterwards and what its future holds today!
The Tour will finish with a Jazz listening session at Dr Xumas
House- please bring a picnic and refreshments.
Time: 12h00 until 14h00 and jazz session afterwards
Price: R180 Includes a tour
of the area, entrance to Museum and Jazz listening session

Street)

December

1st December- Spicy Fordsburg-Walking Tour (Saturday)
“We have a variety of people living here- from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Syria and now even
from other parts of Africa. The lovely thing about all this is that everyone brings
a bit of their culture, and it’s all blended and works well together here in
Fordsburg. We have what we call the “square”, which is the hub of commercial
activity. Here you will find different shops owned by people of different
nationalities. Fordsburg was always multilayered and very cosmopolitan, and in
that sense it hasn’t changed much. It’s a very mixed culture, and it makes you
see a different side to South Africa”.

Essop Bahana (The Joburg Book-Nechama Brodie (Ed)

experience them all. Join Past Experiences for a relaxing Saturday Afternoon

clothes, henna, incense and much more. The shops in Fordsburg can’t be beat and
we will then take them in- from delicious sweetmeats wrapped in beautiful
boxes, to fresh home made Indian snacks. The food is really to die for! Why not

Hindu prayer shops- buy beautiful trinkets and holy statues. We will end off at
about 17h30 at one of Fordsburg’s best restaurants for a delicious early
dinner. You are then most welcome to walk around the market some more (it’s
open till late), have a traditional barbers shave, have your eye brows threaded
or make your way home. We cannot recommend this experience enough.

Braamfontein gets a beach...yes you heard right...a beach!!

A few weeks ago I had my first visit to a beach in the Joburg City. This makes no sense as we are land locked and don't even have a water source or river, but I kid you not.

Picture this- a sandy beach, bright umbrellas, deck chairs, cocktails, a rooftop...and the Nelson Mandela Bridge in the Background.

I have to say I was unconvinced when I first heard about the concept of a beach in the city but after attending the launch...I am a believer in The Beach! Its awesome. The Beach is the creation of property developer and owner of the 70 Juta precinct Adam Levi.

If I can give you one piece of advice: get to The Beach ASAP! It is the perfect place to relax on a hot Jozi afternoon.

Here are the details:

The beach, in collaboration with Grolsch, will be open from 11h00 - 16h00 every Saturday. R150 gets you in for an afternoon of free beer and sun bathing.

Photo of the Week (23rd to 27th July 2012)

Ponte! Need I even say more?  Such an iconic Joburg building! If I have been away from Joburg for a few weeks (ok...that only happens when i am on holiday otherwise nothing can keep me out of my city), the sight of the Jozi skyline and Ponte makes my heart beat just a little bit faster and I know I am home. What a building! What a city!

Photo of the Week- 16th to 22nd July 2012

Happy Birthday Mr M!

I thought it would be fitting to choose this pic of Nelson for our Photo of the Week as it was his Birthday on Wednesday. 67 minutes of doing good is a great idea- to see a huge section of the community donating their time to doing some good is great. We didn't do ours but have scheduled to do it in 2 weeks time at our childrens home Bethesda. And everyone was going mad- wishing him happy birthday on Facebook, Twitter, the radio etc. But I do wonder how many people actually know what he really did and who he really was. I don't think I can answer this question but If you know me at all, you know I am obsessed with the Rivonia Trial and the period 1961 to 1963, particularly anti-apartheid resistance. So I thought It would be fitting to post a bit of the speech that Nelson Mandela gave at the Rivonia Trial. I find it incredibly inspirational.

"I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for, and to see realised. But my Lord, if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."

LOVE IT!!!

FYI, the image is from the public art mosaics on Hollard Street by Marco Cianfanelli. Another great piece of Inner City Public Art

Urban Arts Platform- Such Great Inner City Project

Here is a great Inner City Event happening this weekend! I find this project, its organisers and kids really inspirational. And it is based at one of my favourite buildings- Ansteys. They have some great events and at the moment a fantastic exhibition featuring join projects from the kids involved with the project and well known local artists.

You must go and have a look, it is at Goethe on Main.

25th August- Saturday- Spicy Fordsburg
“We have a variety of people living here- from Pakistan,
Bangladesh, Syria and now even from other parts of Africa. The lovely thing
about all this is that everyone brings a bit of their culture, and its all
blended and works well together here in Fordsburg. We have what we call the
“square”, which is the hub of commercial activity. Here you will find different
shops owned by people of different nationalities. Fordsburg was always
multilayered and very cosmopolitan, and in that sense it hasn’t changed much.
It’s a very mixed culture, and it makes you see a different side to South
Africa”.

trinkets and holy statues. We will end off at about 17h30 at one of Fordsburg’s best restaurants for a delicious early dinner. You are then most welcome to

Bethesda Childrens Home- Update and Thanks

Just a quick blog post about a wonderful Children's Home in Soweto called Bethesda that is run by the Salvation Army. I have written about them before but just thought I would write a quick update as Past Experiences has decided to adopt the home and help out when ever we can!

Choosing the right cupcake is very important!
Firstly I would like to use the opportunity to thank all those that have made donations in time, goods or financially. We put a note on Facebook just before Christmas asking for any donations and could not believe how generous all our Past Experiences customers (lets rather call them friends) were! We received R2000 in donations from individuals, families and corporates. We were also completely bowled over by those who attended our end of year Christmas party at the home! You were such a help and I cannot thank you enough.

We had a party, made party hats, had lunch, played and danced with the kids! We also just spent time with them which I think is the most important thing! They just love being hugged and talked to! The kids and staff at the home (particularly the most awesome matron Captain Nomsa) are just so fantastic and you cannot but feel absolutely swept up in the excitement and craziness of over 30 kids when you visit!

We did not spend all of the donations on the party but rather decided to buy a few items that they needed after the festive season. They decided on school shirts and underwear so 2 weeks ago we went out and bought 2 huge bags for them.

Play time at Bethesda

Last week Monday we went and dropped them off and also threw a small birthday party for the kids whose Birthday it has been in the last 3 months. Captain Nomsa supplied birthday gifts and we supplied cake, hot dogs and ice cream. It is definitely going to have to be a regular event as one little boy asked if we were coming back for his Birthday in July- I had to answer yes!

Our guide Tania has also come up with the best idea- we will be visiting the home on Easter weekend for an Easter Egg hunt so any chocolate donations are most welcome!

My dad Gerald and Past Experiences Big Boss chatting to the kids- they loved him!
He had a congo line going and some really mad dancing
We hope to make visiting the kids a regular event so any donations (clothes etc are welcome) as we are a small family business and can only do so much!

Thanks again to all those that donated!

A Much Belated Post on the Neighbourhoodgoods Market, Braamfontein

Neighbourhoodgoods Market

Yes I know, I am behind the times but I have been meaning to write a post on the market for months, so here it is!

The Inner City has been lucky enough in the last few months to have a couple of weekend markets open up. Although I think they are great, my favourite is definitely the Neighbourhoodgoods Market situated in Braamfontein.

The best cupcakes in town!

It is open every Saturday from 09h00 to 15h00 and it is the perfect way to spend a Saturday morning. It is also playing a huge part in the rejuvination of the Jozi Inner City as loads of people who would normally never come into the city are venturing in to experience the Market.
Past Experiences Guide Tania enjoying an Oyster at the Market

Braamfontein is fab on a Saturday and what is great is that the whole area is pumping, not just the market. From the Southpoint District and their coffee shops and restuarants to the 70 Juta precint and Kitcheners. I like how it is not surrounded by a wall but rather you really experience the city.

The Market itself is great and the food on offer is sooooo yummy! My advice when you arrive treat yourself to a Bloody Mary (the best one in Joburg) and then walk around all the stalls sampling all the delights on offer. Fabulous olives, cheese, lemonade, Ethiopian food and dont even get me started on the cupcakes!

Sue's Karoo Lemonade...so refreshing!

Why not enjoy a long lazy breakfast and a few drinks at the Market and then head over to Kitcheners (Joburg's second oldest pub) for a beer.

And of course I cant not mention, that my company Past Experiences does a fantastic 2 hour Braamfontein walk on a Saturday before the market opens, ending at the Market. Its an awesome way to start the day!

Photo of the Week (9th to the 15th January 2012)

We have recently got to know the staff and kids at the Bethesda Children's Home in Soweto. They are AWESOME! What a special and beautiful place. We are making it our CSR programme (and personal goal) this year to visit them and help out in anyway we can. This weeks pic of the week is taken by and featuring one of my favourite people and colleague at Past Experiences Tania Olsson. I love this picture of them all having fun with their Xmas hats on and stars and glitter all over their faces. This picture was taken at Past Experiences Christmas Party. We decided that instead of having a party for the company that we would rather have one at the Children's home. It was definitely the best end of year party I have ever been to. We all made Christmas crowns together and had treats and danced. I must also thank all the amazing people out their who donated their time and goods/ money. We couldn't have done it without you!
